Hattie Ann
Dorr Yeager
Aug 16, 1953 — Feb 20, 2023
Hattie Ann Dorr was born on August 16, 1953 in Steamboat Springs, Colorado to Elmer J & Frances E. (May) Dorr. She was the youngest of the nine Dorr children joining Genie, Jim, Ted, Newt, Peggy Jo, Bob, Mike and Fred at the Bar Lazy L Ranch on Elk River, North of Steamboat.
Hattie grew up on the ranch doing all the things normal ranch kids did in the 1950s and 60s. She also got to be in Girl Scouts! Hattie attended Steamboat Springs schools, graduating in 1971. She married Gary L Yeager on October 17, 1969 at the Methodist Church in Steamboat . This union was blessed with 4 children, Shane, Shannon, Shawn and Shari.
Hattie was a bookkeeper by trade and loved the numbers game. She was a bookkeeper for Bullocks of Steamboat, Ryan Incorporated (Rock Castle Mine), Maher-Bonny Construction Company, Wither Oil & Gas, Baker Plumbing & Heating, High Country Plumbing Supply and Aspen Grove Mechanical among many other side companies. Her last official employer was THPK Accountants where she could be found doing the payroll and books for any number of companies around town. Bookkeeping was a puzzle for her and she would work hours to find the penny error, uncovering at times multi-thousand dollar embezzlements.
Much of the 1970s and early 80s was dominated by the raising of cattle on the ranch. But winter weekends found Gary and Hattie darting across the western United States chariot racing! They went places like Ely, NV or Pocatello, ID, just for the weekend – spending way more time on the road than actually racing! Saratoga, WY was a "close trip"! They also dabbled in flat saddle racing, but most of that was done a lot closer to home. Hattie was pickup driver, horse walker, time & record keeper and companion on these trips, always in the background doing whatever needed done. One fateful racing trip to Laramie, WY in April 1976, resulted in less fingers when she was caught in a lead rope as a horse jerked back. This accident led to lectures for anyone she saw with their fingers inside a lead rope loop.
Gary and Hattie, along with Mike & Helen Dorr bowled leagues at the Snow Bowl II forming the H&H MAG bowling team but her and Gary also bowled in individual leagues for many seasons. Hattie participated in many organizations as an official member, or as Gary's wife, including the Routt County Farm Bureau, Routt County Cattleman's Association & Routt County Cowbells, the Steamboat Jackpot Rodeo Association, and the Yampa Valley Cutter & Chariot Association. She was a 43 year member of the Chapter X, P.E.O. Sisterhood and a 50 year leader of Ranch House 4-H Club, being a leader on several 4-H Exchange trips in the 80's and 90's which allowed her to travel and see a bit of the country.
Hattie became "Gram" in 1992. Six grandchildren – Lysa, Shealynne, William, Brandon, Dean and Ashley - and 9 great-grandchildren – Madelyn, Oliver, Braddock, Bridger, Kade, Cecilia, Jayne, Wyler and Waylon - were a blessing and the lights of her life.
In 2005, Gary made the decision to go to Arizona for the winters in hopes that it would help with his health. By 2013, Gary was unable to be on his own for the winter months and Hattie began joining him. While never having lived anywhere but the ranch on Elk River in Routt County, and with the thought that she would miss snow on Christmas, once she spent a winter in Arizona, she said she hoped to never spend another winter in Routt County! While in Arizona, Gary and Hattie were active in several gold prospecting clubs and enjoyed the outings while never knowing when they might run into someone from home!
The summer of 2019 saw the celebration of Gary & Hattie's 50 th wedding anniversary. Due to travel and timing, the celebration was held in conjunction with the annual Elk River Rendezvous in July, but they did indeed celebrate their actual anniversary in October before Gary passed away March 12, 2020 in Salome, Arizona.
Hattie was a member of the First Baptist Church in Steamboat Springs for most of her children's lives, but often talked about time in her youth spent at Mount Elam Bible Camp with the Euzoa Bible friends. She also attended Anchor Way Baptist Church in Steamboat and Grace Community Church in Salome, Arizona. Her faith in Jesus and keeping her eyes on the Lord helped her through many trials and tribulations in her life.
Hattie passed from this earth and entered the gates of Heaven on February 20, 2023 in Steamboat Springs. Hattie was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, parents, Elmer & Frances, step-father, George Wheeler, Sisters Genie Brandhorst and her husband Bob and Peggy Jo Carpenter, Brothers, Jim, Ted and his wife Carol, Newt, Mike, and Fred. Step-brother, Jack Wheeler and his wife Donna Jean, and step-sister, Viola Fry. Hattie is survived by her children, Shane(Forest), Shannon (Brian Valora), Shawn (Eva) and Shari. Grandchildren, Shealynne (Darin Dollahite), Brandon (Jessica), Lysa (Joe Long), William Valora, Dean and Ashley. Great-grandchildren, Kade, Wyler & Waylon Dollahite, Braddock & Cecilia Yeager, Madelyn, Oliver, Bridger and Jayne Long. Brother, Bob Dorr, sister-in-laws, Peg, Shelly and Rachel Dorr, Sharron Newman, Kelly Shaver and brothers-in-law Bill Carpenter and Mike Yeager along with numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and all of "her kids"!
