Obituary

Jayne O. McCawley lived a full and vibrant life. Her passion for family, being active outdoors, and serving her community filled her well-lived days. Born and raised in Lancaster, PA, Jayne earned the nickname "Annie Oakley" as she was the only female on her high school's rifle team and went to a state championship. Jayne met her beloved husband, Bill, their first week at Albright College and were married in December 1973. Jayne and Bill lived in Connecticut, California, New Jersey, London, UK, and finally Steamboat Springs, CO, where they have made their home since 2002. Wherever she has lived, Jayne made a point to build strong friendships and volunteer in her community. She was the president of the Junior League in Summit, NJ, president of the St. John's Wood Women's Club in London, UK, and served with the Yampa Valley Medical Center Auxiliary as well as with the Strings Guild in Steamboat Springs. Jayne will also be remembered for her generous hospitality. She was known to open her home often to friends and even strangers who were far from home and needed a place to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner. Jayne was an avid runner, and her children remember her getting out in the wee hours of the morning for her 5-mile loop in rain, snow, or shine. She also enjoyed riding her horse Ritz, hiking, skiing, and snowshoeing in Steamboat.

Jayne is survived by her husband of 50 years, William M. McCawley Jr., and her three children: Catherine J. Harter (Douglas) of Madison, NJ, Elizabeth S. Mathey (Seth) of Steamboat Springs, CO, Andrew W. McCawley of Boston, MA, her sister Constance E. Jeff (Dennis) of Lancaster, PA, nephew Jamison D. Jeff (Heather), and niece Meredith E. Sadoulet (Samuel). She is now reunited in Heaven with her grandson Jack Harter and her parents Glenn E. and Betty Jane Orndorf. She is survived by her six grandchildren: Caroline, Meghan, and Olivia
Harter, and James, Luke, and Eva Mathey.

Jayne was a strong and determined woman. She had her third child in her late forties, survived breast cancer, and beautifully juggled being both a mother and grandmother simultaneously. Jayne especially enjoyed each of her grandchildren during their infant stages. When faced with a terminal neurological condition several years ago, Jayne grew in her faith in God through attending church weekly and her participation in Community Bible Study. Many friends from both, and other volunteers, have faithfully walked alongside Jayne through her most challenging days providing her with practical help and company. Though her struggles were great, Jayne kept smiling and saying, "I love you" until she went to Heaven.

Jayne's family would like to thank the staff at Casey's Pond and Northwest Colorado Hospice, especially our dear friend Emily Henderson, and the numerous friends who helped us all for the past four years. A Celebration of Life will be held at Anchor Way Church on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 11:00 am.
