Julie "Marty"
Uhlmann
Apr 2, 1935 — Dec 20, 2025
Julie "Marty" Uhlmann, was late for almost everything in her life, including her own wedding. Nonetheless, she hurriedly departed this world on December 20, 2025, joining her beloved husband, Jim Boucher, in the afterlife. She left behind six children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren, all wondering why she was suddenly in such a rush.
Marty was an only child who followed in her father's footsteps, earning a doctorate degree and becoming a university professor. She taught anthropology at the University of Wyoming, worked as a research anthropologist at the Denver Research Institute, was the first project director for the Wyoming Human Services Project, consulted with the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, and ultimately served as the Equal Vocational Education Opportunity Coordinator for the State of Wyoming. It was while lobbying in that capacity that she met Jim, then a Wyoming State legislator. They were inseparable from that point on, spending the next 43 years traveling the world, eating French pastries, drinking good wine, and loving each other fully.
Politics was a lifelong passion of Marty's. She protested at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, and nearly fifty years later, attended the Women's March in 2017, wearing a hand-knitted pink hat and surrounded by most of the women in her extended family. Even at 90 years young, she proudly took her "protest walker" to local anti-Trump rallies, holding a sign that read simply: "Lock him up!"
While Jim's heart (and therefore Marty's foundation) was in their Laramie home, Marty also flourished in Steamboat Springs, where she had a close circle of friends, regularly attended French club, and embraced an active life as an avid biker, skier, and backpacker.
In her final years, Marty was enormously proud of her family. She doted on her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her grand-pets, read till 2 a.m. most mornings, and shamelessly ate ice cream for dinner. She was smart, determined, strong, and entirely herself to the end. She will be deeply missed by all those who loved her.
A celebration of Marty's life will be held 10:00 a.m., Sunday, August 16, 2026 in Steamboat Springs at the Yampa River Botanical Park on The Green. The family hopes that Marty's many friends can attend, and can be just a few minutes late in her honor.
