He was born February 12, 1945 in Oak Creek to Ronald and Edith (Rossi) Kirby. LeRoy was a third generation Routt and Eagle County rancher. At the age of twelve, his Uncle Harold taught him how to operate heavy equipment, which would serve him well in his chosen career. During his high school years, LeRoy was known throughout the region for his talent as a basketball player. He graduated from McCoy High School in 1963 and attended CSU before returning to the family ranch.
On November 19, 1967 LeRoy married Charlene Branson. They made their home in McCoy, where they both were raised and where they would raise their sons, Rick and Travis.
As an adult, LeRoy worked on the ranch and at the McCoy Cinder Pit as a heavy machine operator. In the early 1980's, he bought into Horn Excavating as a co-owner and then in 1993, he started K&M Trucking with his lifelong friend, Don Matlock. In 2008, LeRoy took over sole ownership of the company. He also served as president of the McCoy Cemetery for over 50 years.
LeRoy was known throughout the community for his hard work, generosity, and his willingness to help anyone at anytime with anything.
LeRoy is survived by his wife of 55 years, Charlene; sons Rick (Jennifer) and Travis, both of McCoy; granddaughter Taylor Kirby Allred (Colt) of Rangely, CO; grandsons Jed Kirby, Colton Kirby, and Beau Kirby, all of McCoy; brother-in-law Jim Schmitt of Yampa; and many extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Edith, and sister Karen Schmitt.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, July 29 at the McCoy Cemetery. A potluck lunch will immediately follow at the home LeRoy and Charlene shared – 21011 Highway 131 in McCoy.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you help your neighbor in remembrance of LeRoy.
