Obituary

Lucy Virginia Kullman, 97, died on January 30, 2025, at Casey's Pond Senior Living in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She was born on June 16, 1927, on a farm along the Fox River four miles east of Kahoka, Missouri. She was the second daughter of Mary Estella (Eagon) McCoy & Merryl Lynch McCoy. Lucy Virginia was named for her Grandma Lucy and her Grandma Virginia. Living in the same household as her Grandma Lucy, she was called "Virginia."

Merryl's parents, Hamor & Lucy McCoy, had built the two-story farmhouse at the turn of the century. Outside the bay windows were flower gardens framed by concrete edging with embedded geode rocks found in the Fox River. The geodes were carefully cracked open to reveal the crystals sparkling in the sunshine. At the Fox River, they would catch fish, and they would ice skate on it in winter. The family farm was a busy one with horses, chickens, livestock, gardens, and fields. They had a cane mill to make molasses. They grew popcorn and peanuts for winter snacks. In the house was a loom for making rugs. They also did knitting, crocheting, quilting, and needlework that included making lace and there was music in the household. Mary McCoy played the piano, and Merryl played banjo. Virginia and her older sister, Twila, took piano lessons.

Virginia had a journal later in life, and she wrote, "I had all the care and love in the world. My sister, Twila, was 5 years old when I was born, and eventually did a lot of babysitting for me.  She is still the best sister I could ever have. Later we had a brother Theron Merryl, and ten years later, a brother John Milan." They remained close throughout their lives.

Virginia attended Kahoka High School graduating in the Class of 1945. After graduation, she worked for the Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa. Then she drove the bookmobile for the Kahoka Library to little country schools in Lewis County & Clark County, Missouri.

On June 16, 1949, at St. Paul's Church in Kahoka, Missouri, Lucy Virginia was united in Marriage to Robert Frederick Kullman. He was born & raised in the countryside south of Cole Camp, Missouri, about 220 miles southwest of Kahoka. He was 7 years older than Virginia, and they met in Kahoka where he got his first job after serving in the army during WWII and then attending Missouri University (MU). He had become the Vocational Agriculture teacher at Kahoka High School.

The couple eventually went to live in Columbia, Missouri, where Robert returned to MU for a Master's in Education degree. And Virginia also went to MU, Department of Nursing Education and completed the practical nursing course. They attended Trinity Lutheran Church, located beside the university campus. Lucy Virgina's Confirmation was there on March 2, 1952. Next their marriage was blessed with one child, Elizabeth Ann (Beth) born in Columbia, MO.

After graduation from MU, the family went to live in the Kansas City area where Robert worked for the Ford Motor Company where one of his brothers was working. When a Vo Ag/Shop/FFA teaching position became open at Cole Camp High School, the family moved to Cole Camp. Robert's parents and relatives lived on farms in wooded hills south of the town. The family were members of Mt. Hulda Lutheran Church in the region of those farms. Virginia still has many close friends of all ages at Mt Hulda, and friends & relatives in the countryside and in town.

Lucy Virginia Kullman got a job as a nurse at the Cole Camp Clinic. For a time, there were two doctors and then just one. She worked for Dr. Arturo Gonzalez from 1960-1994. She loved her work and the people of the area. She enjoyed the quiet beauty of being in the Ozark hills, and also the festive times of family gatherings on the Kullman farms.

In 2008, after Robert had passed away, Lucy Virginia came to live with her daughter & son-in-law, Beth & Roger, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She enjoyed many good times in the beautiful mountains and town and enjoyed meeting lots of people. She attended Concordia Lutheran Church in Steamboat Springs and made many friends there. The more people she met in life, the more room she had in her heart for them as dearly loved individuals.

In her late years, as she came to need skilled nursing care, she lived at Casey's Pond and embraced that friendly community, enjoying the people, the musicians, the fun activities & camaraderie, the on-site church services, the delicious food, and the beautiful outdoors including the lupine flowers, the pond with beaver and osprey and visiting moose.

She is survived by Beth & Roger Watson along with Roger's adult son, Ryan, her sister Twila, her cousin Rebecca, and many nieces & nephews, great-nieces & nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

"My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; and I give them eternal life; and they shall never perish; neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand." John 10: 27, 28
