Obituary

On Sunday June 28th, 2026, Marit Perkins went home to be with her husband Jack, and the legacy she leaves behind is a tale of love, kindness, generosity, friendship, fun, laughs, and a splash of unpredictable / zany. That splash surfaced almost immediately as Marit and her twin sister Beret were born in Kansas City, MO on July 24, 1935, and they were initially named Sally and Susie. At some point Sally and Susie were adopted, renamed, and life began anew as Marit and Beret. Their new parents provided a loving home with a new big sister, who was also adopted, and her journey began to take shape.

Life evolved and as years passed, Marit began flying as a Stewardess for North Central Airline, who had routes throughout the Midwest. This becomes pertinent as one of the Captains she flew with introduced her to a frequent flyer by the name of Jack Perkins who was involved in the ski industry. Marit was adventurous with a solid work ethic, and a love story merged with an opportunity to become yet another American success story.

Jack concentrated on marketing skis and boots while Marit focused on soft goods and together they were pioneers in the world of trade shows. Their successes compounded in a manner that afforded them the

opportunity to purchase land on a rumored fledgling ski mountain. Mt. Werner took shape as did their new home, which soon became “Apres Ski Central” just off the Right- o’- Way ski run in the world-renowned Steamboat Ski Resort.

Marit was an entertainer extraordinaire and the Perkins’ social skills, which were legendary throughout the ski industry, became an integral part of Steamboat lore. Their two homes here were built for entertaining and their friendly welcoming personalities kept them well stocked with friends and new arrivals. Marit’s culinary skills kept their guests well fed and the bar was always open.

Marit was a very thoughtful, kind, loving friend, a magnet for fun, frivolity, and she was adventurous without bounds. If asked if she wanted to........ the answer was YES before a destination or a plan was revealed.

Marit's love of life, friends, and adventures was only equaled by her love for her dogs whose headstones can all be found in her side yard under a tree on Fox Lane. Marit and Jack did not have children and thus the goals of the Winter Sports Club and the children involved were very close to their hearts. They were silently extremely generous with equipment and funding, and that continues to this day.

The inputs to Marit's legacy came to a close on Sunday June 28th, but the memories and tales will live on through those who loved her. That wonderful whimsical little girl who began life as Sally and ended it as Marit wove an enviable web of unsurpassed love for others while spreading joy throughout.
