Obituary

Cal passed peacefully into his next life after struggling from significant cognitive and physical decline brought about by encephalitis in 2018, and most recently the recurrence of prostate cancer from 2001. The last years of Cal's life were challenging, considering he was strong, active, and able until his brain insult. Cal will be greatly missed by his wife Marlyn, his sons Calvin Jr. (Mary) of Spokane, WA and Michael of Charlotte, NC, his daughter Christa (Tim) of Manitowish Waters, WI, his grandsons Simon (Steamboat Springs) and Daniel (currently in Lander, WY) and many other family members, friends and former colleagues.

Cal was born in Pottstown, PA to Walter and Georgina (Dresch) Myers. His brothers Harold (Leona) and Walter (Marjorie) were respectively, 15 and 10 years older. As a child, Cal had a chemistry lab in an unused room, raised pigeons and rabbits and attended Boy Scout Jamborees. He discovered his love of music early on so took voice lessons and sang in church choirs. Later, this talent allowed him to earn money as a baritone soloist. One of the highlights of his youth was attending jazz and swing performances of the Big Bands at Sunnybrook Ballroom. The venue belonged to parents of his good friends. It was expensive to attend, but he was smuggled in where they enjoyed listening to jazz and swing, and feverishly danced the night away.

Cal attended Wofford College on scholarship and graduated with degrees in History and Literature. He was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa and the Key Club. Cal sang at weddings and funerals and was the student conductor for Wofford's traveling Glee Club. Hemet Marlyn, his wife of 70 years, at a Winthrop Collegeperformance and shortly thereafter, he and Marlyn (Conway, SC) attended summer school at Wofford where they saw each other every day.

Cal and Marlyn married in 1953 and moved to eastern PA where Cal was a youth minister at the Roxboro United Methodist Church and while attending Drew Theological, was a student minister at the Jarrettown UMC. After acquiring Masters degrees in Divinity and Theology, Cal served as an associate pastor at the Germantown Methodist Church.

In 1961, Cal and his family moved to New Philadelphia, OHwhere he served at the First United Methodist Church. In 1965, he was appointed to the East Ohio Methodist Conference Staff and moved to Akron, Ohio. During these early Ohio years, Caltook a greater interest in social justice and became active in the Civil Rights and anti-war movements, sometimes attending rallies in Washington DC .

In 1970, Cal took an appointment to the UMC of Berea (Ohio) where he served for 23 years until his retirement in 1993. He served and additional year as the interim minister in 2000 when the senior pastor was elected to the Episcopy. The church was in the center of Baldwin-Wallace College which continues to have a notable music program, and Cal was surrounded by musical talent. During his tenure, the church contracted with a German firm for the construction of a new organ. It was built in Germany. It was unique in that it was one of the few Tracker organs in the United States. The church flourished under Cal's leadership and boasted outstanding music, youth, and missionprograms. The years in Berea were magical and Cal, along withhis talented staff and church members, touched innumerable lives. While in Berea, Cal completed a Doctor of Ministry degree at the Methodist Theological Seminary of Ohio. There was a close association between the church and Baldwin-Wallace College, a Methodist Institution. He was the recipient of an honorary doctorate from the college as he ministered to the community and the college. He visited the USSR as a delegateof the National Council of Churches and was  part of a team that lead a group to the Holy Land in the 80's. It was during theBerea years when Cal and his family learned to ski and began to venture on ski trips out west.

Cal retired to Steamboat in 1993 where he remained in awe of the beauty of the mountains and the snowy and cold winters until the day he passed. He became active in the Methodist Church in Steamboat. He sang in the church choir and the Yampa Valley Singers. He led spiritual retreats in the church and with groups of his Ohio colleagues and friends, and shared his biblical knowledge in adult education classes. He played tennis and skied well into his eighties. Cal was a loving and supportive grandfather to Simon and Daniel as well as a godfather to Nolan, Quinn, and Claire Connell, children of Karen Connell, all whom he adored.

During his illness, Cal looked forward to visits from his friends for music days when they listened to Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra, Willie Nelson and other favorites. He enjoyed working on crossword puzzles, reading, watching church online, and walking as he was able. Even though he was not the man he had been, there were always glimmers of his intellect, compassion, and humor which reminded us of the man he was.
