Robert Jay
Peckham
Nov 7, 1957 — Apr 10, 2017
Robert "Rob" Jay Peckham was born November 7th, 1957 in Houston, Tx to Curtis Neil and Johnnie Sue (Leming) Peckham. Rob spent his early years in Las Vegas, graduating from Valley High in Las Vegas in 1976. He attended UNLV for 2 yrs majoring in pre-med.
Rob was a multi-faceted young man. While attending high school he worked as a juggler at Circus Circus. He also raced Baja cars in the desert against Iron Man Stewart and others. As a teenager in Vegas, Friday nights were spent running up and down Fremont St.
He had a passion for hunting. This passion was inspired by his Uncle Jerry, who became a father figure when Rob's dad died early in his life. Rob was a voracious reader of hunting writings which ultimately called him to the Colorado mountains. He actually began a collection of Peterson's Hunting magazine at the age of 16, acquiring the first issue Nov 1973 and archived all issues until Aug 2014, when Craig Boddington editor of the magazine, was able to have the collection gifted over to him from Rob.
After moving to Colorado in 1979, Rob married and out of that marriage his two children Robb and Tara were born. Rob had an expansive work history, anything from wrangler to Distribution Specialties, Power Equipment sales and mining drill bits sales with Brunner Lay in Denver . Punctuating this with a variety of local occupations in Oak Creek, Big Tunas, Twentymile Coal and Cogswell Construction in Steamboat.
In 1994 while single parenting his two children, Rob met and fell in love with his wife Nancy (Babe) Harmon. Together they blended their families of two children each, Robb and Tara and Emmy and Sunny. Rob and Babe were married in 1999 in their self-built log home. This home continued to nurture their children and grandchildren with joyous holidays and family occasions for years to come. Building his dream log home with his wife and family was one of his proudest achievements, only second to the joy of being a father and granddad.
Rob was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed skiing, mountain biking, dirt biking and of course his passion for hunting and fishing played a major role in his life. He excelled in both. He hunted white tail deer in Oklahoma on his grandfather's farm and elk and mule deer in the Colorado high country.
Fly fishing the rivers in Colorado was true high light in Rob's life. In 2005 while fishing on the Blue River ("Jurassic Park" to Rob), he caught a 17 lb 2.6oz Snake River Cutthroat Trout which holds the state record to this day.
When Rob was diagnosed with ALS in 2010, his family and friends continued to gather and support in as many ways as they could to honor Robs many varied interests. Even though Rob appeared shy and modest, he often charmed his family and friends with colorful storytelling and one-liners. His close friends noted his humor, graciousness and constant honesty to be amongst his most favorable attributes. He continued to be a center of focus and light of the family for over 7 years as he battled the disease.
He continued to fish on the Blue River until 2012 and hunt each year, including this last year with his son. Rob's life was cut short-but he sure lived it to the fullest.
Rob passed away quietly at home with his loving wife by his side on April 10, 2017. He is survived by his wife Nancy (Babe), children Robb Peckham (Emma), Tara Peckham, Emmylou Harmon and Sunny Harmon (Brian Mathews), grandchildren, Heather Peckham, Lily & John Butler and Ellie & Finn Mathews. Siblings Curtis Peckham (DaNett), Kathy Gallup (Tim), Jim Peckham and Arlan Peckham (Brigitt) Uncles Jerry Leming (Janet) and Ancel Peckham ( Mary)
