Stania M.
Lake
Mar 23, 1936 — May 13, 2019
Stania Marx Lake passed away peacefully May 13th, 2019 at the Casey's Pond Doak Walker House in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. She was 83.
Stania was born in San Francisco, CA March 23, 1936 to Stanley and Virginia Marx. She was the eldest daughter, with two younger brothers, Steve and Peter.
After graduating from high school at San Dominico School, in Marin County, CA, Stania attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she was a member of the Delta Gamma sorority. In 1963, through mutual friends, Stania met the love of her life Joseph F Lake, Jr, a long-time Steamboat Springs resident.
Stania and Joe married in 1965 and lived in the Strawberry Park area of Steamboat Springs. Following Joe's promotion within Peabody Coal Company in 1972, the family relocated to Denver where they resided for nearly 20 years. They maintained a summer cabin along the Elk River where they spent many of their summer weekends and holidays. In 1995, upon the completion of building their retirement home on Seedhouse Road, just walking distance from their cabin, Stania and Joe realized their dream of moving back to the Steamboat area permanently. It was here they enjoyed a rich, happy, and peaceful life fishing along the Elk River, hiking in the surrounding wilderness, and enjoying time with family and friends.
Stania loved the outdoors. She was an avid fly fisherwoman, and enjoyed gardening and cooking delicious meals for her loved ones. Stania had a kind, thoughtful and generous heart, and was loved by many people. She will be greatly missed.
Stania is survived by her three daughters, Wendy Steben, Rebecca Writer and Elizabeth Creamer. Her grandchildren are Hannah Pulley, Graham O'Connor, Meera Mennies, Sarah Mennies, Colton Creamer, Grace Creamer, and Carina Creamer. Stania also is survived by 5 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held Saturday, May 18th at 11am at the Steamboat Christian Center, and will be followed by a lunch reception at the Lake family home on Seedhouse Road.
