Obituary

Tobin Douglas Powell, son of Boyd and Dolores Powell, was born in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on May 11, 1968. He passed away on March 13th, 2016 in Orem, Utah after a long and courageous battle with cancer. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Tobin was sealed to his family in the Manti Utah Temple for time and all eternity.

Tobin spent the majority of his childhood and teenage years in Valentine, Nebraska after his father moved the family from Wheatland, Wyoming. Tobin was known as a free spirit who loved to drive fast and take chances.  He had a contagious smile and a heart of gold.

He learned at a young age to work hard.  Upon graduating from Valentine Rural High School in 1986, Tobin enlisted in the United States Army where he served four years of active duty, two of which were spent in Germany as a tank mechanic, and four years of reserve duty.  After completing his service to his country, Tobin began attending college at Colorado State University to study Occupational Therapy. Instead, his love for construction led him in a different direction.  Known as a construction artist, he specialized in the operation of heavy equipment. He was admired for his ability to operate a backhoe without the slightest measurement.  His talents made him highly sought after in the field and he was hired onto to major projects including Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, Loveland Colorado City Water Works, as well as the Niobrara Water Project.

After his cancer diagnosis in the fall of 2014, he moved from Sheridan, Wyoming to Orem, Utah to be with family as he received medical treatment through the George E. Wahlen VA Medical Center and the world renowned Huntsman Cancer Institute in Salt Lake City.

Besides his parents Boyd (Jackie), Fruita CO and Dolores, Orem UT, he leaves behind his life partner, Carrie Steven, Bakersville CA; his five brothers Nathan (Kestin), Eagle Mountain UT, Patrick (Crystal), Rexburg ID, Zachary, Orem UT, Joshua, Orem UT, Jared (Kara), Mesa AZ; his three sisters Sabra, Orem UT, Amanda Long (Brent), Valentine NE; Nikole, Orem UT as well as 16 nieces and nephews, a great nephew and many friends.

A public memorial service will be held at the Yampa Valley Funeral Home in Steamboat Springs, Colorado on Thursday, March 17th, 2016 from 11am to 12pm followed by a private graveside service at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery.  A reception celebrating the life of Tobin will be held in Valentine, Nebraska on Saturday, March 19th, 2016 in the Community Hall at the Cherry County Fairgrounds between the hours of 5pm and 7pm.

Condolence flowers can be sent to the Yampa Valley Funeral Home prior to the memorial service. In lieu of monetary gifts, please donate to the Huntsman Cancer Institute: www.huntsmancancer.org
